MSSU welcomes back students with the spirit tunnel tradition

JOPLIN, Mo. — It’s not quite the first day of school for Missouri Southern, but campus leaders want to make sure students are ready and excited for classes to return.

A big part of the welcome back is the Spirit Tunnel, a trending tradition for MSSU. Dozens of well-wishers line up starting at the pedestrian tunnel under Newman Road, with the procession winding through the parking lot and onto campus. The cheerleaders cheered the event, building excitement for the fall semester.

More about MSSU…

“Alumni, community members, the Joplin Chamber of Commerce closed their office so their employees could be here. You know, that kind of connection between Missouri Southern and the community, and that support means a lot,” said Dr. Dean Van Galen, MSSU President.

Other kickoff activities today included a coffee with the president at the Alumni Mansion and a pep rally.
