Man charged in Daviess Street shooting

An Owensboro man was charged with felony assault Thursday after a shooting on Daviess Street.

Owensboro Police Department reports say the incident happened at 1:33 p.m. Thursday in the 1200 block of West Fifth Street. Reports say officers found one person who had suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound during the incident. The victim was taken to Owensboro Regional Health Hospital for treatment.

Officers recovered several shell casings and a firearm at the scene, reports say. Detectives identified a suspect and arrested Laterrian D. Burroughs, 22, of the 2900 block of Wandering Lane, Thursday evening.

Burroughs was charged with first-degree assault, which is a Class B felony punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison upon conviction. Reports say Burroughs was also charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, which stems from endangering the life of a second person at the scene.

Burroughs was being held Friday in the Daviess County Detention Center on $50,000 bond. Burroughs is scheduled to make his next appearance in Daviess District Court on August 26.

Meanwhile, a second shooting, which happened shortly after Thursday’s shooting on Daviess Street, is still under investigation.

OPD reports say officers were called to a home in the 1200 block of West Fifth Street Thursday at 1:55 p.m. In that incident, officers also found a person with an apparently non-life threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to OSR for medical care.

Reports say that inside the home, officers found what appeared to be drugs, including bags containing suspected cocaine residue and suspected marijuana, along with drug paraphernalia. A carcass was recovered

No one else in the house was injured.

An OPD social media post says investigators do not believe the two shootings are related.
