How do businesses fail inspections?

Companies are out of compliance when they have too many violations, problems that can cause foodborne illness, when a problem can’t be fixed right away, like insect and rodent infestations, and more. But most violations are minor and are corrected while an inspection takes place.

Typically, establishments are re-inspected within 10 days to ensure compliance.

It is rare for a business to close due to a failed inspection. But it can happen. Closures are usually voluntary and due to major things like sewer leaks, pest problems, and water or power outages. Closures are usually temporary.
