JCPenney to close 4 stores, including one in New England, report says

JCPenney is set to close four stores in the US, including one in New England, according to a report from RetailDive.

No Massachusetts locations will be affected by the impending closings. The other locations closing are at the Shoppes at Bel Air in Mobile, Alabama, Sikes Senter in Wichita Falls, Texas, and Wayne Towne Center in Wayne, New Jersey, RetailDive reported.

JCPenney did not immediately respond to a request for confirmation of the closings sent Saturday afternoon.

JCPenney has eight stores in Massachusetts: in Hadley, Holyoke, Leominster, Marlborough, North Attleborough, North Dartmouth, Peabody and Wareham.

In a statement provided to RetailDive, the company blamed the inability to continue its current leases at the properties.

“We are grateful to our dedicated associates and loyal customers who have shopped at these locations over the years,” the statement read, according to RetailDive. “We continue to work to make every dollar count for America’s diverse, hard-working families, and we welcome them to shop at other JCPenney stores in the area and at JCPenney.com.”

In addition to the eight locations in Massachusetts, JCPenney has more than 650 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
