20 years ago (2004)

Kohl’s department store in Baxter led the company in sales after its soft opening Aug. 15. A special early morning store tour and ceremony helped set up for the official opening on Aug. 20. Kohl’s reported that it hired about 200 people here from more than 800 applicants. The majority of jobs are part-time.

30 years ago (1994)

The Brainerd Bears scored six runs in the fourth inning and held off the Marshall Mallards 11-9 in their North Central League win to move to a 2-1/2 game lead over Minneapolis in their division. Eight pitchers combined to throw 366 pitches in the 3-hour, 48-minute marathon. Marshall scored eight unearned runs on seven Bear errors.

40 Years Ago (1984)

Wayne Britton has just gone from the frying pan into the fire. Britton, one of six county jail inmates furloughed last month because of an overheated jail, has failed to return as ordered. Britton’s status, since he didn’t show up today, went from “unauthorized absence” to being listed as an “escapee.”

60 Years Ago (1964)

The Brainerd Braves are in a showdown for the Region 8B title and a trip to state with a 6-1 win over Clarissa. Mike Englehart went the distance, scattering six hits. Two of the Brown brothers helped the cause with home runs, Dale a 375-foot shot in the fourth and Jimmy hit his in the fifth.

80 Years Ago (1944)

The Navy and Marine Corps Medal has been awarded to Lt. Leslie Swanson of Brainerd for his role in saving the life of Lt. John Rooney. Rooney crashed during a training flight in Miami, Florida, and his plane caught fire. Swanson, driving nearby, rushed to the plane and got the pilot out of his shoulder straps and lifted him from the burning plane.

100 years ago (1924)

Gasoline prices tobogganed yesterday afternoon at Brainerd filling stations. The price of common gasoline dropped from 18.8 cents per gallon to 16 cents. High test gasoline dropped to 19 cents a gallon. Gas has been at these low prices in the Brainerd vicinity for some time, and the drop in the city was expected.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall’s Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving.
