Mammootty Committee Report on Hema: There is no power in cinema

Malayalam superstar Mammootty finally reacted to the Hema Committee report today, September 1. In a post shared on Facebook, the veteran actor shared why he waited so long to share his views on the report’s findings and also said that the court should decide the punishment. He added that there are no powers in cinema and that cinema has to survive.

“I wholeheartedly welcome and support the recommendations and solutions mentioned in the Hema Committee report. It is time for all film industry associations to join hands and implement them. Regarding the complaints that have been raised now, the police investigation is progressing (sic),” Mammootty shared on his Facebook post.

The Hema Committee report highlighted cases of rampant sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry and also shed light on how those in powerful positions in the industry continuously harassed female actors and technicians.

Mammootty also wrote, “The full version of the Justice Hema Committee report is before the court. Let the police investigate honestly. Let the court decide the penalties. There is no “power plant” in cinema. Cinema is not an arena where such things can be applied. The practical recommendations of the Hema Committee report should be implemented if there are legal obstacles. Ultimately, cinema must survive.

Sharing why he took time to react to the report’s findings, he said, “The organization (Malayalam Film Artistes’ Association) and its leadership should react first. I think I should give my opinion as a member only from their responses, that’s why I waited so long (sic).”

Here is the note:

Cases were registered against several big names in the industry, including actor Jayasurya and actor-politician Mukesh, after the Hema Committee Report came to light. Superstar Mohanlal has also resigned as AMMA president (Malayalam Film Artistes Association).
