Teen charged with attempted murder in shooting of 49ers player Ricky Pearsall

A 17-year-old has been arraigned on charges including attempted murder in the Saturday shooting of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Ricky Pearsall.

After appearing in juvenile court Wednesday, the high school’s attorney told reporters that the teenager and his family were “very sorry” for the incident and that their thoughts went out to Pearsall and his family.

“There is real, genuine remorse in this,” Deputy Public Defender Bob Dunlap told The Associated Press. – He is a young boy.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins on Tuesday announced the 17-year-old was charged with multiple offenses in connection with the armed robbery that left both Pearsall and the teenager injured. Those charges include attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and attempted second-degree robbery.

John Lynch, general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, said Pearsall had just signed an autograph and was shopping for luggage for the team’s travels when the event took place in Union Square.

San Francisco police said the male suspect approached Pearsall just after 3:30 p.m. and tried to steal his Rolex watch on the rookie receiver. A physical struggle ensued, leaving Pearsall with a close-range gunshot wound to the chest and the subject with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Pearsall was hospitalized overnight and released the next day. His mother posted on social media saying the bullet was complete, meaning it exited Pearsall’s back and did not hit any vital organs.

Lynch said Tuesday that the 23-year-old was back with the team the day after being released from the hospital and is “doing very well.”

“It’s nothing short of miraculous that he came out of it as well as he did. On behalf of Ricky and his family … he just wants to express and the team wants to express our gratitude.” Lynch said during a press conference, thanking the various first-timers who attended the event.

The GM said Pearsall has been placed on the non-football injury list, meaning he will miss at least four weeks. To fill the vacancy on their roster, the 49ers said they signed offensive tackle Brandon Parker to a one-year deal, but Lynch said he expects Pearsall to be back on the field soon.

“When we signed Ricky, we did it for the long haul, and Ricky is going to be a fantastic player here,” Lynch said. “He’s anxious. He was disappointed, but he understood that I put him on this list and what that entails. It’s at least four weeks and we’re going to take it as it comes.”

Because the suspect is a juvenile, Jenkins said there is “very little” to share other than his charges, which cannot be filed in adult court under California law. But she said Tuesday that her office will take a closer look at the case to determine whether or not there should be a transfer hearing, where a judge will decide whether the juvenile system will be “equipped to rehabilitate” the juvenile or whether he would should be transferred to adult court.
