Amarillo Public Library’s monthly program aims to reduce social isolation

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – The Amarillo Public Library is taking a mental health initiative by offering residents volunteer opportunities through the Social RX program.

The program offers residents experiencing social isolation the chance to branch out in a safe and controlled space.

“The Surgeon General in May 2023 issued a public advisory that there was a public health emergency caused by an epidemic of social isolation and loneliness,” said APL Program Specialist Cynthia Hunt.

According to Hunt, the program will include classes in communication and social skills, as well as learning about the risks associated with social isolation.

“And you might be thinking, ‘What does this have to do with public health?’ People who are socially isolated have a much higher risk of — a substantially higher risk of developing heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, depression, anxiety,” Hunt said.

Each month, different community programs, such as Animal Management and Welfare, the Office of Emergency Management and the League of Women Voters, will share information about becoming a volunteer with program participants.
