Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Red River Pigs Welcome New Piglet

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – Cheyenne Mountain Zoo announced Wednesday that it welcomed its newest resident last week.

Red River pigs Finn and Gus, both first-time parents, welcomed a new baby on Thursday, August 29, according to the zoo. The zoo said they were seen breeding, but zookeepers were unaware a baby was on the way. .

The zoo said Red River piglets, like the adults, have bright orange coats, but the babies also have brown and white stripes running the length of their bodies, along with small brown and white spots all over. These stripes and spots usually fade around six months of age, but act as important camouflage while they are around.

Finn’s caretakers said she embraced her piglet with all the key behaviors they want to see from a first-time mother, and because of that, animal care staff are unlikely to handle the baby if there is no medical need. The baby’s gender has not been determined and likely won’t be for several weeks. In keeping with CMZoo tradition, the baby probably won’t be named for at least 30 days.

According to the zoo, unlike many species, Red River pig parents are active in raising their young. But for now, Finn and the baby will have time to bond on their own, and Gus will join the family once Finn shows he’s comfortable.

The zoo said it will announce when it makes its public debut on their social media channels.
